Getting waxed is a convenient, longer-lasting solution for getting rid of unwanted hair, but what you might not know is that what you do before and after your appointment can affect your results. If you’ve ever wondered why your results didn’t last as long as expected, why you experienced more irritation than usual, or why you’re dealing with ingrown hairs, one of these common mistakes could be the reason. Here are some of the biggest mistakes we see and how they affect your waxing results.
- Shaving Between Appointments
One of the most common mistakes we see is shaving between waxing appointments. Waxing removes hair from the root, while shaving only removes hair from the surface. When you shave between waxes, your hair growth cycle resets, making it much harder to achieve consistent waxing results.
Your hair grows in more evenly when you consistently wax, because your waxing specialist catches more hairs at the same phase of the hair growth cycle. Shaving interrupts that process by cutting the hair at the surface instead of removing it from the root.
- Waiting Too Long Between Appointments
While it may be tempting to stretch the results from your previous wax, waiting too long between appointments isn’t ideal. Scheduling your wax every 4 to 6 weeks helps maintain consistent results for most areas of the body. If you wait too long between waxes, hair can become excessively long, making the service less comfortable and requiring more cleanup during your appointment.
- Not Waiting Long Enough Between Appointments
On the other hand, not waiting long enough between appointments can also be harmful. This is because the hair isn’t long enough for the wax to grab onto, leaving you with uneven, patchy regrowth. For the best results, wait until your hair is about the length of a grain of rice before getting waxed.
- Not Exfoliating
Buildup on the skin can lead to ingrown hairs, irritation, and painful bumps. Exfoliating helps reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs by getting rid of the dead skin cells that trap hairs beneath the surface. We recommend exfoliating two to three times per week, 24-48 hours after your appointment.
- Skipping After-care
Taking care of your skin after a wax is the key to smooth, glowing results. We recommend our line of aftercare products:
- Ingrown RX: A gentle exfoliating spray that helps prevent and reduce ingrown hairs by unclogging pores, soothing inflammation, and promoting smoother, healthier-looking skin.
- Calm-panion: A lightweight blend of lavender and grapeseed oil that calms redness, deeply moisturizes, and leaves freshly waxed skin soft, nourished, and glowing.
- Smooth Cruisin Salve: A multi-purpose healing salve that soothes post-wax skin while helping moisturize and support the recovery of cuts, burns, scrapes, and other minor skin irritations.
- Tea-tree Tune-up: A tea tree bath salt soak that calms irritation, reduces redness, and helps freshly waxed skin recover with its soothing and antibacterial properties.
