Spring in Indiana always keeps us guessing. Between rainstorms, brisk mornings that feel more like winter, and the few days where the sun actually does come out, summer has been on everyone’s minds. However, if you’re already picking out swimwear, shorts, and sandals, you should already be waxing. Here’s the thing most people don’t realize: the best time to start waxing isn’t when summer arrives, it’s before. Keep reading to find out why starting early makes all the difference.
When Is The Best Time To Start?
We often see clients who take a break from waxing during winter and spring and jump back in when summer comes around. Although swimsuit season might seem like a convenient time to start waxing again, it’s actually doing you more harm than good.
Whether it’s your first time waxing or you’ve been waxed before, starting your waxing routine in spring is the best way to set your skin up for success. Hair grows in cycles, and first time waxing results may vary depending on said cycles. When you switch from shaving to waxing, your hair is in different stages, which means it will regrow at different lengths and rates after your first wax.
It is recommended to start waxing 2-3 months in advance to allow hair growth cycles time to synchronize, ensuring finer, sparser regrowth and longer-lasting results. Spring is the perfect time to start establishing your waxing routine, so you have smooth, glowing skin when you finally hit the beach.
What If It’s My First Time?
If it’s your first time waxing, the sooner you start, the better the results. You may have heard the phrase “Your first wax is your worst wax”. This is true for a few reasons.
- Your skin is adjusting: Waxing removes the dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin along with the hair, and if it’s your first time, your skin is most likely not used to this level of exfoliation.
- Your pain tolerance is building: Over time, your pain tolerance will improve, and waxing sessions will get much easier and less painful
- You may experience redness or irritation: The area may be a bit more sensitive the first time because your skin and follicles haven’t adjusted to it yet. Your skin will react less and heal more quickly after multiple sessions.
Getting into a consistent routine a few months before summer allows your skin time to adjust and heal, while also giving you the opportunity to decide what aftercare solutions work best for you.

Why Is Spring The Best Time To Start?
Summer has so many fun and exciting things to look forward to: sunbathing by the pool, swimming in the lake, hiking the dunes, and so much more. However, sweating, sun exposure, and swimming do not mix well with freshly waxed skin. This, in addition to irritated skin from just having your first wax in almost a year, is a recipe for disaster.
Establishing a good, consistent waxing schedule with a soothing aftercare routine a few months in advance allows time for the skin to heal. Plus, if this is your first time waxing or your first appointment in a while, there’s no temptation to shave during the awkward regrowth phase between waxes. After 3 to 4 sessions, hair should be regrowing consistently and synchronized. Just in time for summer!
