Spring break is approaching quickly, which means warm weather, vacations, beach days, and more. However, along with the excitement of trips and swimsuits often comes the outdated mindset that you need a ‘spring break body.’
For years, social media and advertising have told women that their bodies need to look a certain way before they step onto a beach. Phrases like “get beach ready” or “spring break prep” are so ingrained into pop culture that this harmful mindset is, unfortunately, normalized. Messages like these make people feel as if they need to change their bodies before they deserve to enjoy their trip.
At Waxi Taxi, we believe that all bodies are spring break bodies. Your body doesn’t need to shrink, change shape, or meet a certain beauty standard before you’re allowed to enjoy your spring break getaway.
Where Does This Stigma Come From?
The concept of having a ‘perfect beach body’ is rooted in decades of media influence. Photoshopped advertisements, impossible beauty standards, and unattainable expectations have created a negative idea that only certain bodies belong in swimsuits.
Bodies are meant to be lived in, and they come in different shapes and sizes. Everybody deserves to experience joy, relaxation, and adventure guilt-free. When we challenge the idea that only certain bodies are acceptable on the beach, we open the door for empowering others. Instead of focusing on the idea that your body is ‘wrong’ or ‘not ready’, we shift the focus to what matters: empowering, uplifting, and breaking stigmas.
Letting Go Of Comparison
Although easier said than done, letting go of comparison and focusing on gratitude and personal growth instead can help shift your mindset from criticism to appreciation for what your body does for you every day. There is so much more to you than the way your body looks on the outside, in comparison to other people, on a beach, or in a swimsuit.
Comparing yourself to others is easy to do when scrolling through social media or even just shopping for a swimsuit. Advertisements, social platforms, and websites show images that rarely reflect reality. Lighting, posing, editing, and filters can dramatically change how a photo looks. Instead of comparing yourself to the best version of someone else, focus on being you.
Ask yourself what you actually want out of your trip. Is it to relax? Sunbathe? Explore a new city? Spend time with friends? These are all experiences that have nothing to do with the size or shape of your body.
Our Judgement Free Policy
If you visit Waxi Taxi before your trip, let this serve as a reminder that our salon is a judgment-free, all-inclusive environment, where everyone is welcome, accepted, and cared for. We see clients of every size, gender, orientation, and race.
Taking time for self-care before a trip is not about conforming to a beauty standard, making your body acceptable, or changing yourself. It’s about doing whatever makes you feel confident, refreshed, and worry-free before heading into your vacation.
Feeling Good In Your Skin
For many people, waxing is part of their self-care routine before a trip. Smooth skin helps clients feel stress-free when wearing shorts, swimsuits, or beach attire.
We recognize that smooth, hair-free skin has been a set beauty standard throughout history. However, at Waxi Taxi, we believe that waxing is not about meeting a set beauty standard, but an option to help people feel more confident in their own skin. It’s important to remember that hair removal is always a personal choice, and not an expectation. The goal is not to create a “perfect” body for the beach. The goal is to help people feel comfortable and confident, however they show up.
Show Up As You Are
The idea that you need to earn a vacation or look a certain way before wearing a swimsuit is outdated and harmful. Everybody deserves to enjoy warm weather, travel, and the beach exactly as they are. The most important thing you can bring on your trip is confidence!
