Let’s talk about a question we get often from both first-timers and waxing-istas: “Is there anything I can do to make waxing more comfortable?” The answer is absolutely! Waxing is never painless; however, there are a few things you can do to make that appointment more comfortable. These are simple changes that can make a big difference in how your skin feels during your appointment. Here are some of our favorite ways to set yourself up for a smoother, more comfortable waxing experience.
Prep
One of the simplest and most important parts of preparing for a wax and reducing pain is to exfoliate 24-48 hours before your appointment. This helps remove dead skin cells, which form a barrier over hair follicles. When you exfoliate, this allows the wax to grip the hair rather than the skin. It also frees trapped hairs or hairs that are curling inwards, making it easier to pull them from the root during your appointment rather than tugging, bending, or snapping the hairs.
Exfoliating also helps soften the area, allowing the wax to grip the hair and be removed smoothly without unnecessary pulling or tugging on the skin or flaky skin patches.
Avoid Stimulants
We know grabbing a coffee on your way in might sound like a fun addition to your self-care day, but it is always best to avoid stimulants, like caffeine and alcohol, before a wax. Caffeine and alcohol tighten your pores and make your skin more sensitive.
Plan Ahead
If you are going to be on your period during your first-ever wax or on a particularly sensitive area, it may be best to reschedule. We have absolutely no problem waxing clients while they are on their period, but the skin is much more sensitive during this time. If your appointment is during the first few days of your period, it may be best to reschedule for a more comfortable experience.
We know that periods can be unpredictable, but be sure to cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance if possible. This allows our waxing specialists to plan their workday accordingly and helps you avoid the cancellation fee.
Let It Grow Out
Be sure your hair is the correct length before coming in for a wax. We recommend about the length of a grain of rice. Resist the urge to shave! When your hair is shorter than ¼ inch, wax cannot properly grip the strand, which will lead to breakage at the surface of the skin or uneven results. Hair that is greater than ½ inch is too long. Hair may become tangled in the wax, bend instead of pulling from the root, snap mid-shaft, or tug sharply at the skin.
Take A Pain Reliever
If you tend to feel uncomfortable during your wax, try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever beforehand. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen 45 minutes before your appointment may help reduce pain and discomfort.
A Little Prep Goes A Long Way
Waxing doesn’t have to be scary, painful, or uncomfortable. A little preparation for your appointment can help it go more smoothly. Most importantly, if you are uncomfortable, experiencing pain, or just nervous, communicate that feeling to your specialist. They are happy to answer questions, take a break, or stop if necessary.
