Chesterton is a tight-knit community nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan. From the shoreline to the farm field, this was the first community that Waxi Taxi called home. Our first location was above a store on Main Street. After years of being on the road, we strategically chose to call Chesterton home for so many reasons. After more than ten years in business as a brick-and-mortar salon, we still call this special community home, just in a bigger location, but still on Main Street.
An Engaged Community:
From the Duneland Chamber to the Exchange Club, even the school systems, the Chesterton community, also known as the Duneland Community, values civic engagement. If you’ve followed Waxi Taxi on social media or frequently read our blog, you’ll know that civic engagement is a core value at Waxi Taxi! Our founder and our employees volunteer regularly in the Duneland community for a wide variety of causes.
Vibrant Independent Business Landscape:
If you have the opportunity to visit downtown Chesterton any day of the week, you’ll see firsthand many vibrant and thriving independent businesses in our downtown. From restaurants, boutiques, a bookstore, spas, and salons, Chesterton is a community that supports independent businesses!
At the heart of this is the Duneland Chamber, an economic powerhouse and champion of small business. Located in a historic depot, they’ve championed small businesses’ causes and events year-round. One of the most notable is The Chesterton European Market, which features 100+ small businesses every Saturday from the first Saturday in May through the last Saturday in October.
On the Doorstep of a National Park:
For those who have lived and played along the Lake Michigan shoreline, this has always been our community’s beach. In 2019, part of the Indiana Dunes State Park was designated as a National Park. This put our little community on the map in a big way, but also meant that we’ve been able to showcase our natural beauty as a community.
The influx of visitors this new designation has brought has had an economic boost for many Chesterton businesses. As the world passes through Chesterton, take in our lakeshore, they are awed by the natural beauty and welcomed by local businesses. We are pleased to be part of the business community in this unique location.
A Community that Gathers:
Whether it is Chesterton’s 3rd Friday evening, where local businesses stay open, offer specials, and welcome and encourage the community to come out and shop, play, and mingle, to the Hometown Holiday’s market and parade, Chesterton regularly comes together as a community to support local businesses while sharing friendship and togetherness.
Chesterton will always be a very special place for Waxi Taxi, it was our first home by choice and our current home by heart.
